Finally, we have arrived in the Bahamas: Crystal clear waters, dazzlingly white beaches and unspoilt wildlife everywhere! Our first anchorage in the Bahamas was Abraham’s Bay, Mayaguana Island, where we anchored 2 days. Our second day there was very windy, so we spent most of our day learning to play poker! We also saw 2 big rays feeding near our boat.

Our trip to Long Island the next day was an overnighter and during the sail I finished my Textiles project: a patchwork pillow! I was looking forward to our arrival at Long Island as that was where we would be meeting our friends Bob and Barbara, who would be joining us for a week of sailing on Silhouette! We anchored in Calabash Bay, which was home to a beautiful resort where we met our friends. They brought us news from England and, an added bonus we weren’t expecting, presents from them and our friends back at home!

The first sail we shared with Bob and Barbara was to George Town. This town did not have the white beaches that our later anchorages offered us, but as we needed to stock up with food and water, it was a good port to head to. Many trips were made to and from the boat with jerry cans, as the water pump was by the dinghy dock. Despite the massive amount of boats anchored in the bay, the number of restaurants was limited. Luckily we found a good restaurant called Club Peace and Plenty, where we had a lovely meal with Bob and Barbara. Unluckily, the restaurant was so good that it attracted a very loud American female, who disturbed our dinner with her twangy accent!

The next day we departed with the intention of going to Adderly Cut, but we anchored in Stocking Island (an island just 3 miles from George Town). On the beach we found a closed café, a volleyball net and a swarm of midges! As well as playing a game of volleyball (Bob and I vs. Barbara and Kerry), we also walked up to an obelisk on the hill, which had a fantastic view of the harbour.

I finally found my white beach in Guyana Cay, a anchorage so shallow you could walk to the next beach around the corner!

After staying only one night on Guyana Cay, we sailed to Staniel’s Cay. We anchored in Thunderball Bay, which got its name from the James Bond film that was filmed in Thunderball Grotto. But before we had a peak in the grotto, Bob, Mum, Kerry and I went for a swim with an eagle ray that was feeding near our boat! We also went for a walk on land to the supermarket, that held very little food necessities, such as ice cream!

We also had a delicious dinner at the yacht club, which was our farewell meal to Bob and Barbara, who were leaving the next day, the 23rd March. It was loads of fun with them on the boat and we hoped they had a fun time with us!

But the Bahamas isn’t finished yet; in fact we still have a whole blog that is Bahamas-Part 2, which we will release in a week’s time!
