The Shorts Debate

We had a slightly restless night so even though it is almost 0900 as I write this, we are only just finishing our first cup of tea. It is much warmer than earlier in the trip and although I am already dressed (shorts), Emily is sitting around in pyjamas (sorry if that is too much detail and she’d certainly never do that at home) and she is wondering whether to put shorts on from the start or whether to change later. Cabin temperature is 19.6, sea temperature 19.5.....

Yesterday it warmed up in the afternoon and we had a perfect afternoon. Blue sky, blue sea and we added to the blueness with our large blue and yellow spinnaker. Perfect sailing. But it takes quite a lot of work and concentration and we would not leave it up at night. Racing crews do, but just too difficult for a small cruising crew. Indeed just before supper the sail did a classic “wrap” around the forestay and took an anxious half hour getting it sorted out and then lowered and stowed.

During the night there was a wind shift and we gybed so there was a bit of a deck party sorting it all out- hence the lazy start.

I’m ready for breakfast once everybody is dressed (shorts)!
