We passed successfully under the bridge at Ayamonte at precisely low water and motored the three and a half hours up the river to arrive at the Proctors yellow house just after 1230.

The Guadiana never ceases to amaze. Its views are uplifting and the sense of wilderness was particularly attractive after a summer dominated by excessive human intervention on the landscape.

The welcome from Eddie and Clare was predictably warm and effusive, and we settled straight in to a long lunch, enjoyed with their Hungarian work away guests, Orshi and Sly, who were spending a couple of weeks doing jobs around the Proctor estate.

Sly is a keen amateur photographer and put together films using his rather impressive drone as well.

On the trip up the river we alighted on the idea of meeting Anna and Michael up at SanLucar, feeling that at least a one way trip down the river again would be a great way to start their short cruise with us to finish the season.

As I write, the four of us have returned to Villa Real for a couple of days at the mouth of the river to victual before setting off further west.

Huge thanks to Eddie and Clare for looking after us for 10 days or so. Can’t wait for the next get together.
