After a lovely evening with Stuart and Carol on board Pollyanna, and, just possibly, the tiniest tad more alcohol than we had planned, we had the (not) early night we needed to prepare for the early start. At 0500 the alarm went off and we sprang into action! Yes we did, you doubting so and so, and by 0520 not only was the anchor up but the sails were set and we were headed out of Portimatx on our course of the day 053 towards Mallorca.

We decided to leave Palma to one side.....very few anchorages there and marinas charging 100 plus euros a night made the prospect a litthe financially daunting so headed instead for Soller on the north east coast, sailing a distance only 5 miles further to do so. The weather gods were kind, with winds from between 170 and 220 degrees, and 10 to 17 knots. So the kite went up and we had a lovely sail, covering the 70 miles in just under 12 hours.

Soller is an absolute gem. A dramatic harbour entrance between towering rock cliffs and then the arrival in a circular natural bay with sheltered anchoring a lovely beach and, for us, the welcome of the Port Authority visitors pontoons. These are available for up to 5 nights for boats up to 12 metres and are cheap, and usually right in the centre of town, so suit us nicely.

The port village is picturesque and charming. The feel is more high end than high rise, and there are a lot of restaurants around the harbour, serving local cuisine at not too frightening prices. And there is the immaculate and quaint tram which links the port to the town of Soller a couple of miles inland.

We took the tram today and explored Soller itself for a few hours and it is all rather lovely. An ancient town of stone buildings, set in groves of orange and lemon trees, all heavy with fruit. A great place to spend a few days.

There’s always a drawback though and on this occasion it is the simple fact that Germany seems to have annexed this part of Mallorca. Old habits die hard.....
