Well, the first day has been one of, shall we say,
ups and downs. We set off in very light winds, motorsailed for almost 2
hours, which was good because we topped up Persephone'ss batteries to 100% and
while doing so, used the watermaker to "create" an extra 30 litres or so of
fresh water for the tanks.
After a couple of hours, the wind built to around
12 knots from the north west, allowing us to reach along or chosen course...085
degrees true...just a tad north of east, as it were.
After dark, the wind went forward, so that by
midnight, local time, we were sailing close hauled, and the strength came up to
over 16 knots so we slabbed in a reef.
That's how things have stayed, with seas lumpy
enough to affect Karen's famous sea legs, but not so lumpy that our progress is
seriously inhiibited.Our first 24 hour run was of 138 miles.
Our bulletin from Phil Meakins advised to maximise
easting at the cost of northing and not to try to get north of about 32.5
degrees, so we have adjusted things to reach off at a slightly more comfortable
angle. Hopefully Karen will recover in the next day or so.
