| 27th July 2013. Spent a very lazy 5 nights at anchor in Portree bay. As there has been virtually no wind it has been calm and flat and easy to forget we are actually on a boat. We came to Portree so we could find a decent place to have dinner to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary on Wednesday. In a rare moment of phone signal we managed to get on Trip Advisor and discovered that one of the 2 charming harbour side houses we can see from the boat has been turned into a restaurant this summer by 2 brothers whose parents have let them set up 6 tables in the family dining room at their home - Scorrybreac. You have to pick up your own wine from the Co-op on the way but that is no hardship for us as we know all the wines from the Ruthin branch. We had a fantastic dinner and day actually as we walked up the hill to the Cullin Hills Hotel in the afternoon and had cream scones and tea in the garden there admiring the view over the bay. Portree is thriving as a tourist resort and it seems that more than 50% of the visitors are foreign. They arrive by the bus load and also by cruise boat to be ferried ashore by tender. Very good for the local economy. It is a lovely place with a variety of shops and restaurants, good fish and chips too as one night all the restaurants were busy so we grabbed fish and chips and powered home in the dinghy to enjoy them on deck before they were cold. We hired a car for a day and popped over to Inverness (3 hours each way) to buy some charts. The run back down Glen Shiel towards the Skye bridge is spectacular. Used the car for a circuit of the northern half of the island as well and this gave us a completely different perspective to the sea view we had already enjoyed. Still enjoying sunny weather and no wind but we are setting off tomorrow regardless. Pelagia at anchor with an inevitable fish farm in the background: |
