Tuesday 22 July 2014. Hot. NW3 variable. 1.5 engine hours.

Headed north from Vadstena to the top of Lake Vattern where there is an archipelago. This 135 by 31 km lake is a Rift Valley formed 600 million years ago. There are ice age species still here apparently and the landscape is very scenic - mostly trees and mountains in the distance.
We were seeking the crystal clear water promised in the guide book, not quite, but still considerably less murky than the canal. Anchored in an idyllic shallow pond between several islands. Spotted a rock with one tree close by as the ideal venue for our swim up/back BBQ.
We loaded the stuff into the dingy and Frans towed Chris and the provisions on over.

We noticed a flock of ducks all sleeping out on the lake. As we approached they started bustling through the water and seemed to be running. Having checked our book we noted they were red breasted mergansers and they couldn't fly away as they were in 'moult' waiting for their breeding plumage to be replaced:
