Friday 11 July 2014. Mostly sunny. N4/5 gusting 6 on the nose (of course). 16.1nm including a long tack. 1.4 engine hours.

Managed to sail up the fairway and north east through Oxlesund. Masses of boats out today in this popular area. To avoid motoring straight into the wind we tacked out into the open water with heavily reefed sails. Wow, what big waves and chop outside the archipelago. Surprising how much shelter even the flat rock islands give. Good point of sail back into shelter through the Idö-fjärden to the sheltered area of Lindödjupet to anchor in 6m near Krokö.

Still quite a stong wind but lovely and cool under the shade and good view to the famous 25m Sparö beacon built in 1777. Sparö island, although tiny, has been important due to it having some height and a prominent position on the route to the ancient port of Västervik. For over 200 years to 1829 it was used as a customs house for all ships passing.
Västervik is now well known as the home town of ABBA’s Björn Ulvæus.
