We have been on the go for a week now. What started off as a fast and
furious first 4 days died down to virtually no wind and us motoring for 2
whole days on glassy smooth seas with no breath of air. Today the wind has
picked up and we are once again under full sail.
I have now done enough long ocean passages to be able to reflect on them. My
first feeling is that they are not my favourite part sailing, it is a means
to get to where you really want to be.....They can be very uncomfortable and
at times scary whilst other times they are slow, tedious and a bit boring. I
know that there are many sailors out there who love the long passages. They
say it's a time to reflect and learn to take life slow. They are entitled to
their views. As a woman I can compare these trips to labour and child
birth. When it starts it can be fast and furious followed by long periods
where nothing happens at all. Frustration, fear, and pain are then rewarded
at the end with a beautiful baby. The pay back after an ocean crossing is
new places, people and cultures and a huge sense of achievement.
During the two days where we had no wind and the seas were glassy smooth
the photos show our roast lamb dinner on Easter day and the first cargo boat
that passed us in 6 days.
