We decided to drive to Jackson Bay which is at the southern end of the west coast road, as too far to go to Fox glacier.  One of the many rivers we had to cross to get there.

About 400 people were landed here in an attempt to establish a port.  Jackson Bay is the west coasts deepest anchorage.  However, no one thought about the weather, the wind and rain, or the numbers of rivers that had to be crossed to get to settlers and within four years most people had gone elsewhere.  On the left is grave of young man who died in 1802 on the schooner ‘Ada’ and on the right is memorial to the settlers who were landed in 1875.

There is nothing here but a few fishing boats and a The Cray Pot café.
