Dunedin was heaving so we stocked up with food and went onto the Otago Peninsula and booked into a small campsite in Portobello.  This was also almost fully booked.  We got the second to last site.  Then went for a short walk to a Marine Station on Portobello Peninsula.  Closed due to earthquake damage.

The Otago peninsula was once over a geological hotspot and the centre of a shield volcano 13 million years ago.  The Otago harbour was created when sea level rose several thousands of years ago and flooded a valley.  Looking back towards Dunedin and out to sea.

The marine station.  There is an island directly behind the far building – St Martin’s or Quarantine Island, which was a quarantine station for immigrants arriving by sea between 1860 and 1920s, where guess what.  Beyond that is another island (Goat Island) – where the land rises slightly, and then the mainland with Dunedin to the left (out of picture).

Looking back towards Portobello.
