Travelled north of Townsville to Cardwell.  We are back in the land of the palm tree

Cyclists on the road, there were 20 groups of these, raising money for children’s cancer.

Just a reminder of what else occurs here.

Cardwell would have been a lovely seaside town apart from the major roadwork’s and beach front repairs.  A cyclone hit here in 2011, not sure if the beach front is being replaced because of this.  Be a lovely walk when it’s finished.   View out towards Goold Island.  The wind comes down the channel between Hinchinbrook Island and the mainland and howls along the shoreline.

There used to be a marina here, the piles are still there but the concrete and wooden pontoons all floated off during the tidal surge associated with the cyclone and lie beneath the water beside the piles.  They tried dredging them up but broke the dredger in 6 minutes – gotta be a record in there somewhere.  Entrance to the channel.

There is a small shipyard here though, dead ahead, which has a couple of berths that might/might not be available for hire.  It also has a 50 tonne lift which was a real surprise to us.

The pier, also undergoing repairs.
