We'd planned to overnight at Islas de Lobo, a beautiful fair weather anchorage with clear water, at the North East corner of Fuerteventura. Unfortunately when we got there it was a bit exposed. We dropped the main & then reluctantly put it back up & sailed a further 40 nm south to the Gran Tarajal, about the only marina on the island with space for visitors and very much unspoilt and less 'touristy' than other area's. On Thursday it rained & then blew so we had a look around & caught up with a few jobs & yesterday we hired a car.
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canaries but by far the most sparsely populated. It is barren & desert like with plenty of high ground and some fine sandy beaches, but only a handful of villages inland. The ground is a reddish brown in contrast to the black lava of Lanzarote. The one large resort we visited, Morro Jable, is backed by huge sand dunes & is popular with wind & kite surfers but was not our cup of tea! All in all it is an interesting island to have visited but it's difficult to see why you would want to stay for long although we were made welcome everywhere.
