OOJAH's AWESOME ODYSSEY

After a good sail from Atlantic City we anchored behind Sandy Hook at the entrance to New York. The following morning we were fortunate to be able to sail under the huge Varrazano Narrows Bridge, the 8th longest in the world with a height clearance of 228' (we looked lost under it), and all the way up to the Statue of Liberty, where unbelievably we we're able to anchor overnight. We then spent 3 nights in Newport Yacht Club Marina right across the Hudson River from South Manhattan - what a location!
New York was amazing. The new World Trade Centre building is something else, defiantly the tallest building in America, even if arriving by rail into the new station underneath was thought provoking. We were embraced by complete strangers & drunk till we dropped. The highlight had to be a wonderful evening in the New York Yacht Club - thank you Tim & Edward. It was an experience we'll never forget.
Even our departure was thrilling - we had a huge send off as we rounded Battery Park (onlookers we're also able to see the Clipper Fleet parading!). We waved goodbye to the Statue of Liberty & shot up the East River, through Hell's gate with 5 knots of stream under us, into the relative tranquility of Manhasset Bay at the beginning of Long Island Sound.

With Love, Peter & Christene
