Statia, or to give it it's full name St Eustatius, is part of the self governing Dutch Antilles. The population of this 5 x 2 mile island is little over 1,500 many of whom are retirees so it's pretty quiet although things were busier offshore with about 8 oil tankers anchored, a large oil jetty & storage tanks - far more than the locals could ever have need of. The only town Oranjestad is almost quaint with some lovely old Dutch buildings but the anchorage was exposed & very rolly. The landscape is dominated by an extinct volcano crater, The Quill, 2,000' high. We enjoyed the walk up to the rim & the view down into the rain forest within it although Christene was less than impressed with the cockerel who attacked her knocking her off balance to steal her sweet as we stood at the top. Next time we eat out it'll be coq au vin with a vengeance!
