OOJAH's AWESOME ODYSSEY

The French island of Martinique is very different to the islands we have visited so far, which we're all British until granted independence 30 or 40 years ago. With perfect timing, just as the value of the pound has sunk 10% against the Euro, we're in Euroland. The island has had more investment although what we've seen is hardly prosperous; there are a lot of French tourists here which alters the flavour of the place. We arrived in the huge marina at Marin & were placed in the super yacht dock next to an immaculate Swan 100 - Oojah felt a bit lost! We then worked up the coast anchoring at Saint Anne, the Anses of Arlet, Fort de France & Saint Pierre. It is Carnival which means colourful processions, incessant African drumbeat, lots of noise & almost everywhere closed for 4 days - you can barely buy a baguette. Everybody has put a lot of effort into their costumes even if the aerosol repainted cars lacked a little finesse! Many of the men are quite camp but maybe they were just taking the piss out of the women! Everyone is very friendly & there's no boat boys harassing us for trade - what a relief.
