Angra do Heroismo is a UNESCO World Heritage City and boasts some fine architecture and well kept public parks.  It was one of the earliest towns to develop in the Azores (achieving city status in 1543) and was an important stop for sailing ships travelling between Africa, India and the Americas. The population has shrunk during recent decades and it now has far more buildings than its population alone would justify, but it is nevertheless a great place to wander around and enjoy the sites.
