Up early for the sail on to New York City. Enroute Oscar was initiated into the Calvados and Backgammon tradition.

Early afternoon we heard an emergency air horn and discovered this little motor boat in the middle of the Sound, and a single foolish American on board. He had come out in his new boat without checking how much fuel he had. He also neglected to bring a VHF radio or check his mobile phone had any charge!  Not a mistake he will make again. We called the coastguard on his behalf and then the tow company that they suggested he contact - $400 plus  the cost of the petrol he needed.

After anchoring Nick, Max and Oscar went on the 30 min train to see the sights of New York, and meet up with Chuck who by coincidence had a stopover here tonight.  They all had supper together and then Max and Oscar went exploring. They found the Skyline Walk, a ‘boardwalk’ that has been constructed along a couple of miles of track that was the old elevated railway.

Nick returned to the boat earlier than them, to a dinghy with a temperamental outboard that wouldn’t start and much wind and rain. It took him and hour to row less than half a mile to the boat. Fortunately the weather improved when Max and Oscar returned a couple of hours later.
