Nick went ashore and cycled to the supermarket in Deltaville about 2 miles away. He also discovered their museum and that this was ‘The Boatbuilding Capital of Chesapeake’.

Favourites boats were ‘The FD Crockett’ – the last largest log boat built for power.

Also a small ship to shore boat called a ‘shallop’. The one exhibited here was used by Captain John Smith (of Jamestown and Pocahontas fame) to explore Chesapeake. It ran aground at the mouth of the Rappahannock River a few miles from here. Whilst waiting for high tide to float the vessel again, John Smith and his crew used their swords to spear the fish. John Smith caught a cow-nose ray that stung his wrist during the process. Apparently his whole arm and chest swelled up, but the ships surgeon applied ‘soothing oils’ and he recovered in time to eat the ray for supper! He named the site of the grounding ‘Stingray Point’.
