Fantastic day sail from Lake Montauk. Good winds and averaging 8 knots. Then something diabolical happened!
We were approaching the Cape Cod Canal and looking for the bay we had decided to anchor overnight in when we crashed into an unmarked and unlit buoy. It was dark and we were sailing at about 9 knots so it was a significant crunch. We dropped the sails, checked for serious leaks and then called the coastguard to inform them of the hazard.
Got to the anchorage and struggled to anchor as the bay was full of mooring buoys and little boats and by this time it was raining and the wind was gusting to about 25 knots. We also discovered the collision had taken the bowsprit and navigation lights off, leaving loose stays that were snagging the anchor and bridle. There is also damage to the port bow with a small leak!
In all the chaos, I did notice the bioluminescence in the bay was really bright green - no photo though.......
