Waited until the rain stopped after lunch and set sail northwards again. Got into Chesapeake Bay proper to discover strong winds and cold rain. Too uncomfortable for us and sadly too much wind for the Genniker which was ripped by the wind – despite being furled. We turned round and headed for the nearest anchorage that happens to be 10 miles south of yesterday. The crew plotted a mutiny to take the boat back to the Bahamas but Nick said it isn’t a mutiny of the Captain agrees!

As we approached the anchorage we saw a 36ft monohull in trouble and just as we decided to inform the coastguard it capsized and the crew ended up in the water. They seemed to have gone aground in about 3 ft of water so we couldn’t get close enough to help. We stayed nearby at the coast guards request (again!) and we told to ‘stand down’ (again) when they had the crew safely on board their boat.  Either Chesapeake Bay is more dangerous than you would imagine or there are many incompetent sailors here. I have heard many boat owners stating that the advent of GPS has made navigating so easy that people think sailing is easy too …….
