We have crossed the Java Sea via P. Raas and P. Bawean. It was easy sailing all the way, now in company with the Swedish boat "Hilda". Necessity is presently anchored many nautical miles up a big Borneo river, the Kumai. It is hot and humid. The jungle is all around (and a small town). This is one of the largest rain forests in the world outside the Amazon, even though they have done their best to burn it off. We could actually smell the tropical forest long before the island came into sight. There seems currently to be no fires.
Today we are set to take a local boat further up the river for two days. (We will not be on the Iridium phone until 18. Sept.) Up there we should see the Orang Utangs (literally "man of the forest"), both in sanctuaries and the wild. A local man will watch Necessity while we are away.
