Title: Necessity is in Charleston in South Carolina - City Marina

Our position is 32:46:66N 79:57:21W
Charleston is a beautiful city, and one one of the oldest in North America. It was founded in 1670, and amazingly there are still some houses from that time. There are lots and lots from the eighteens century. All are well maintained with families living in them. They are also surprisingly "grand" in the old southern style with small, but well kept gardens. Strolling around in the city is peaceful and rewarding.
We got here from Fernandino Beach, also very nice, though quite small. The center is totally dedicated to tourism despite being wedged between two big plants, one of them producing pulp. The wind fortunately was in the right direction.
The Intracoastal Waterways are shallow and windy in Georgia. We had had enough of running aground, so from Fernandino we headed out to sea. Charleston in South Carolina was 160nm away, which meant a little over 24 hours at sea. It was a nice cruise with good conditions. Maybe too good. We needed the engine half the time. Even so it was good to get away from the canal and do some real cruising. Coming into Charleston is not spectacular, but is was "historic". On the the way in we passed by Fort Sumpter, the place were the civil war started. Today we will make an effort to see the sights in Charleston including the fort.
