Good afternoon from onboard Pi
Squared.
This is not our official blog, but a notice from
the yacht skipper to explain the reasons for our retirement from the racing
fleet of ARC 2007.
We Officially retired from the Racing fleet, today
at 12.00. The reason for this is to ensure the continued safety of both
the crew and the boat. We are currently 322 miles from St Lucia which is
within motoring distance and are therefore making our way to safe haven under
engine alone.
The reason for this, is that a problem with the rig
became very apparant last night, during some very strong winds. It seems
that an element of the rig had worked its way loose and therefore was allowing
the rig to move in a way that could potentially compromise rig stability.
A check at first light this morning confirmed this, and after a subsequent
satellite telephone call back to my riggers in the UK , the decision was made
not to continue under sail, but to make our way under engine alone. The crew
were informed of this decision immediately afterwards and all support the
decision.
Everyone onboard is safe and well, and looking
forward to reaching land - which should be sometime during the day on
Friday.
