Looking for a monastery
Our position 59:05.910N 05:36.507E Distance covered 8.3 Nm When we were in Stavanger I had read about Norway’s only preserved monastery from before the time of the Reformation and thought we might visit the island it was situated on. It was raining heavily in the morning and we delayed leaving Kvitsoy in the hopes it might dry up. In the event it stopped long enough for us to set off but started again and rained for most of the short passage to Finnsandbukta on Mosteroy. Leaving Ystabohamn Narrow channels We were interested in their approach to the timber cladding – cut to fit after fixing to the wall All sorts of activity at the fish farm we passed First sight of the monastery but visibility ahead wasn’t great It was not entirely clear where we should tie up and we were slightly panicked by the depth at the nicer jetty, by the hotel, going down to zero so we tied up slightly further away against some tyres. We thought we had spotted an electricity connection there but it proved to have a connection unlike anything we had seen before. An appeal to the hotel revealed that none of the electricity points worked in any case and they stretched a cable across the car park for us. The connection was sheltered from the rain under a wooden box. tied up to tyres with the wooden box protecting our electricity junction just visible After lunch and when the rain had stopped we ventured out to find the monastery. It wasn’t a long walk, along the road, but by the time we got there the museum was closed for the day, so we satisfied ourselves by looking round the outside and relishing the exercise on the walk back. Views on the walk Sheep waiting for a bus (or maybe just sheltering from the rain) Monastery (under repair) View from the monastery The smoother hotel jetty – but shallower water Back at the boat - and it’s not raining! |
