We didn’t have a long passage planned for Saturday so had a relaxing morning and then left at midday in bright sunshine. It was an uneventful broad reach, under headsail only, in the lee of Oland to Stora Ror. We passed Borgholm, the largest town on the island, but had chosen not to stop there as the pilot book likened it to Southend in the 1950s.

Saying goodbye to Sandvik and the empty berths

Borgholm and its castle. (Not close enough to assess the similarity to Southend)

This house seemed scarily isolated and enclosed by dark forests

Going in along the leading line

Somewhat disconcertingly the hook for the stern line fell off twice while we were trying to tie up – it had never shown any inclination to do this previously – but third time lucky and we were soon tied up in a snug little harbour, surrounded by trees.

Tied up eventually

In spite of the late start, there was still time for a stroll before dinner – not that there was much to stroll to. Half the harbour area was really shallow and was used for swimming and very surprisingly we also discovered a boules court.

Not deep enough for us in this part of the harbour

Apart from the language you’d have thought we were in France
