Late yesterday afternoon the wind went East and became light, so the engine was finally started. Through the night the wind gave us a little help but the engine continued to be our main propulsion, and that is still the situation. Looking at today's gribs we will be motoring for at least another 24 hours but the good news is that the Easterly winds in the channel which have been such a stable feature are finally giving way to a southerly and then south Westerly wind. Plenty can happen yet but we are hoping to be broad reaching up to Start Point on Tuesday evening and with a bit of luck and a few more revs on the engine we will be in the River Dart before dark. After clearing customs I hope to get John and Richard back to the Exe on Thursday.
This afternoon, a boat that is more or less upright, a progressively calmer sea, and hot water is tempting the crew into the shower.
We are starting to see more traffic, both freighters and fishing boats, but as the visibility is quite poor, 1.5 to 2 miles, mostly on the AIS and the radar, which has been warmed up for the first time.
Running a Start Point waypoint which is more or less our final destination and having weather predictions beyond our ETA gives an almost there feeling. but in reality Bolt Head is not just over the horizon. There is plenty yet to do and we know things can change but one cannot help thinking of the comforts to be enjoyed ashore, starting with a decent pint or two and a good steak and chips.
