We are still sailing to windward on starboard tack. Up until 21:00 yesterday we were making about four knots in more or less the right direction, but then as John's watch started the wind dropped and backed  into the East. We were not surprised the gribs had predicted a calm patch. John held on for a while making slow progress and slipping North. After all starting the engine would have woken the skipper and we have had these short lived calms before from time to time. Things started to improve on Jim's watch and by the time it was my turn at 03:00 the wind was back in the SE and a rising. For the rest of the day, it is 15:15 now,  the wind has stayed in the SE and strengthened enough to give us 5 plus knots. A bonus indeed bearing in mind we were expecting to be motoring. Fingers crossed it continues a while longer.
At home I never touch wood or cross my fingers, but out here I find myself doing it all the time. Fate seems to play a major role and I'm not prepared to tempt it. I can see why the old sailors were a superstitious bunch.
