Since leaving the delightful anchorage at Iles de Salut we have been in relatively shallow water over the shelf running around the east coast of South America. Consequently the South Equatorial current has not been that helpful and earlier today it was adverse for a while and slowed down our progress. We are now on a course that will take us to the ENE of Trinidad hopefully avoiding the many oil platforms in that vicinity.   Winds are light except when we have a heavy rain squall, last night Claire got me out of my bunk around midnight to reef the main during a heavy squall – needless to say I got a good shower! We now have less than 5 knots of wind and our speed has dropped to I knot – very frustrating.

Our only concern now is that a tropical storm or hurricane to the north of Trinidad might disrupt our progress and our brother in law Sandy in the UK is helpfully watching the American hurricane website and sending us daily updates – so far so good!
