Before The Start

Moonshine
Fri 24 Nov 2006 12:10
We are sitting quietly on the marina in Las Palmas waiting for something to happen! The boat is ready to go, so are we. There is a distinct danger that if we don't leave soon, Alun will drink all the beer, and eat all the food intended to last three of us for three weeks. The problem with the ARC is the same as the advantage. It is tied to specific dates. Currently the weather is perfect, but we're waiting for it to get worse before we can leave ! Leaving now would be good, but not in the spirit of the race!

Something about the boats background.

Moonshine is a Warrior 35, built 1977. This will be her 4th Atlantic crossing, but our 2nd. She is owned and skippered by Rod Bennett, and crewed by his son-in-law Dave Parsons, and a friend Alun Jones. Moonshine has had an interesting history.
She was wrecked in a storm in Oban in 1991, sold, and rebuilt. She then wandered across the Atlantic twice in her new ownership before having a gally fire in 1999. Rod bought the boat then and the first year was spent
with Dave and Rod rebuilding the interior to original specs. The boat was then extensively singlehanded by both Rod and Dave, with both doing the ARC in 2004. Alun has joined them for 2006.
Respective wives, girlfriends, children, and grandchildren are all following to St. Lucia by Virgin Air! They were all invited, but couldnt understand how three weeks of discomfort could be better than the Gatwick Hilton followed by 8 hours of eating and drinking with Richard.

Thanks again to all our friends who are interested and following our progress, and thankyou for the emails. They are gratefully recieved - except those that contain attachments or pictures - unfortunately the satelite phone link struggles with that and logs us out and we lose the link. Anything is good as long as it is text only.

Thankyou all for the sendoffs we have had from both the William, the Rising Sun - and others, and to Di and Mike who came to Las Palmas to say hello.

We'll be thinking of you all on the trip.

Rod, Dave, Alun
