We left Las Palmas on Tuesday morning and motor
sailed North in a horrible confused sea to round the top end of Gran Canaria.
Typical of many of the islands is the rapid depth change from well over 1000
metres in a very short distance which can cause unpleasant wave patterns. After
an hour we cut the engine and bore away for Tenerife, rapidly overhauling a
Rustler 36 and gradually pulling away from a Dutch new Moody 45 DS which tried
hard to keep up and evetually set a 'parasail' spinnaker to give more speed!
Bright sunshine, sparkling seas and "Moonbeam" was in her element. The sea was
still turbulent at times but the sail itself was effortless and after 54 miles
we docked in Tenerife Santa Cruz at 1730 having averaged nearly 7 knots and only
.7 mile astern of the Moody - of course we were not racing!
