Oops, that'll teach us to ask for a formula won't it? At least three people so far have sent the Haversine formula, BxWx and James both sent on the Haversine solution, and a particularly fine effort from Karim and Marc's Dad who managed to send the formula via about a dozen saty texts and using the very limited charcter set. Well done and thanks to everyone.
