On my way to Sarkoy yesterday I was concerned because the engine seemed to make a funny noise and the whole boat shook for a while. I suspected that a blade had come off the propeller but after a minute or so it all settled down so I assumed that something had got caught on the propeller but had been thrown off.
After a friend emailed me to see if I was ok after the earthquake I realised what had happened.
Marmara is a pretty island and looks lovely as you approach from the sea.
The harbour entrance is to the right of the picture.
Minka backed in again. There was quite an audience of old boys who spend all day in the harbour cafe playing cards. One of them came and took my lines which was kind.
I met up with a couple of English chaps taking their boat to Bulgaria. We had lunch together before they set off to do an overnight trip to Istanbul.
I had a look around the town but there is not a lot to see. This old mosque caught my eye.
Beside it there was what I assume to be a graveyard with some unusual memorials.
There are quite a few streets which lead up the hill from the port.
A few older houses. The top two stories of this one are wood which is probably why it has survived the earthquakes.
This place although derelict has a wonderful position on a rocky outcrop overlooking the bay.
I am sorry this picture was taken into the sun. It is meant to show the high speed water ambulance parked in its berth.
