Herewith a few facts that we should have known about the Keys but have since found out!
The overseas highway runs for about 127 miles.
There are 42 bridges linking the Keys
The longest bridge is 7 miles
Henry Flagler built a railway to Key West in 1905/1912. It was destroyed by a hurricane.
It was built to help visitors access the Keys and for the cigar industry with tobacco coming from Cuba (90 miles away)
The population of Key West is about 70,000
Key West is 14 feet above sea level.
House prices are high because of second homes and many of the young have to move away. They are building “affordable homes” !!
Tidal range is about 30 inches

Termites are a problem——houses have to be wrapped up in a tarpaulin and gassed. The house has to be vacated for 48 hours.

Popular stop for cruise ships 

The incidence of hurricanes. Most seem to miss Key West and strike further up the coast.
