Jumped on the local bus (# 13!) to Edgartown - a seaport village, named for Edgar, son of James II - the first colonial town settlement on the island, and has been the county seat since 1642. In the late 1700s, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket developed a booming whaling industry, by late 1800s more than 100 Edgartown men were captains of whaling ships, between the two inlands they own a quarter of America's whaling fleet. However, by the beginning of 20 century the influence of the whaling industry to Edgartown declined.
Today, it known mainly for its tourism. Shops are aplenty (nice quality, art galleries, restaurants and bars (English style) abound! Even street players advertising their Methodist singing group. A very pretty little port with very New England style white board and black storm shutter houses and lighthouse the sand pit of Blant Point.
Another local bus (#8) out to the beach, then back to Edgartown for the #13 to Oak Bluffs and a light dinner aboard Magic Friday rounding off a good day exploring more of Martha's Vineyard.
