As the cold light of dawn broke, our position just south of Savannah was several hours ahead of high tide - too long to wait offshore and too soon to risk crossing the shoal bank north of the Tybee Rd onto the ICW inside Hilton Head. Decision made to carry on, course re-set for a possible northern entrance to Hilton Head and either anchor in the bay or motor up to Beauford SC. Then a freshening wind forecast backing to the south meant we could sail on and reach Charleston just before sunset. Decision made again, course re-set again and another 55-60nm to pass under the hull.

As the day crept on, the shoreline changed from industrial to flat marshland and then to high rise again as Charleston came into sight. Suddenly a visitor - we picked up a small, tired passenger along the way - a Pine Warbler hitching a ride for a few miles.

A favourable tide ahead of us and the southerly strengthening we made the navigation channel and the "ferocious" looking breakwater rocks for early evening. Motoring up the Southern Channel to downtown Charleston in the fading light, slipping past luxurious beach houses, Fort Summter and the Cooper Bridge in the distance, finally anchor dropped we came to a full stop just across from the City "Mega" yacht marina..we were set for the night and a good sleep!
