Early start, slipping quietly out of the marina as the sun rose over the golden salt marshes - glorious! Out to sea, sails set and head southward for a short trip to St. Andrew's Sound and BrickHill River – our planned overnight anchorage. Passing the Brunswick shrimpers hard at work whilst we enjoyed a leisurely sail under clear blue skies!! Well, it was a short trip into St Andrew's - despite the navigation marks we touched the sandy bottom trying to get in south of the sound - a quick reverse, off the bottom and back out to deep water...hmmm - the chart clearly shows 4m of water, low tide 2m we should still have cleared. Not going to try again, not going to wait for the flood tide - we decided to sail (now motor as the wind had died) further south - into St Mary's I let and up the Cumberland River to anchor west of Cumberland Island ... where wild horses roam on the beach (we had visited sometime before via ferry with Annelise). But before the horses - a giant turtle sighting out to sea - orange/brown at least a 3ft shell size - unconfirmed but still a great sight. St Mary's proved the easier entrance - a deep water shipping channel and up into Dungeness-Greyfield Channel, past the ferry dock to nestle in amongst the yachts for a quiet anchorage...or was it...?? A delightful evening meal (Vietnamese shrimp salad), dolphins alongside, sunset over the creek and a Hornblower episode to watch whilst we settled on the anchor…. That was until 02:00 a.m. when the shallow water alarm went off – less than 3ft under the keel – plenty of water BUT an island appeared only 20ft off our stern at low tide. Well, the tide had turned so nothing more to do but re-set the alarm and sleep.
