Academy Bay has a small town with one small supermarket, several food shops, a weekly veggie market and a daily fish market.  Santa Cruz had been spruced up since we were last here five years ago  and somewhat ‘resortified’ in that the main street is now very fancy with different coloured paved surface, a surfeit of flower beds, a fancy good market stall area and – horror – two toy town type trains made out of mostly pink plastic to ferry the tourists up and down the street.  Nevertheless it still retains its charm, especially away from the beaten track where things are a bit more low key.

A favourite place is the fish market where the fishing boats tie up and land their catch…..

and, as Mike chooses some fish for supper, the wildlife make sure they get their share….

This sea lion is elderly and so given all the fish skin to eat while the pelicans get the bones.  Excellent recycling and waste management system

But the younger guys make sure that they check things out as well…..

But our favourite was this chap who could not have got any closer to the tuna that we bought…….
