Cuttyhunk to Martha’s Vineyard

Left anchorage in Cuttyhunk at 08.15 and went across to the fuel dock to refuel. Bit difficult getting off as some very gusty north wind kept pushing us back on. More polishing of the gel coat as the dock had piles to tie up to.

Managed to leave and then out, main sail and genoa raised and had a very enjoyable sail around the end of Cuttyhunk into the Vineyard sound.  There are ways to cut through the Elizabeth islands but all sound not straight forward so we took the easy way out, but at least we could sail.

As the wind was more northerly we eventually ended up motoring but managed to sail about an hour and a half.  We managed to find some shallow water in the sound which was difficult to see on the Navionics chart but on the Garmin Blue chart is very obvious. We were alerted by the change in the water surface!

Got into Vineyard Haven, Martha’s Vineyard at about 14.15. Contacted the moorings for a mooring behind the breakwater, but non available for our size boat, but we were advised not to pick up a mooring outside the breakwater as bad weather was due the next day and they would be untenable. To be safe we should go through the bascule bridge into Lagoon Pond and anchor.  The next opening of the bridge was at 15.15 so we anchored until then. About 6 boats were also going in too, presumably to escape the expected weather front.

The bridge is very narrow with a dog leg channel to get in around some shallow water. Once inside we found a spot in about 6m water and anchored to sit out the bad weather...
