Alligator River to Coinjock Marina

We left the marina in Alligator river at 07.45, the last boat to leave!  Where the river meets the Albermarle Sound can be difficult due to the shifting shoals but the channel is well marked though may differ from the charts as the markers are moved every so often.

Out in the Albermarle sound, which in some wind conditions can be quite rough as it is shallow water, we had a very pleasant sail across to pick up the ICW on the other side.  There are 2 branches to Norfolk here, one through the Dismal Swamp, and the other through the North Carolina Cut.  The Dismal Swamp looks very picturesque from all the photos we have seen, but unfortunately too shallow for our 1.9m draught. Also, we have discovered, it is now closed so everyone has to come the way we’re going.

The ICW meanders along with quite reasonable depths here; we even had about 6m at one stage.  Saw Turkey Vultures (look like buzzards) and osprey, one even nesting on one of the channel markers.

We spent the night in Coinjock marina (famed for its ribs which we didn’t try) and had intended to leave on Tuesday but woke up to thunderstorms and heavy rain so have decided to stay another night.

Just spoken to Verity as James’ has had his heart op today and it appears to have gone well.
