Southport.

Sunday 25th September

Southport is a small town on the Cape Fear River in North Carolina. It is fairly old in US terms and is a an interesting interlude on the ICW as we have to cross the river to get to the next section.  Doesn’t look straight forward, so will get some advice.  Also the next part of the ICW up to Beaufort/Morehead City, North Carolina does not look very interesting with very few places to stop.  If the weather cooperates we may go out to sea here and sail up to Beaufort.

We decided to take a taxi into Southport and have a look around.  It is Sunday and not a lots was open.  The local Maritime Museum doesn’t open on Sundays and Mondays, but the Visitor Centre opens at 13.00, so we went there. They had an interesting small exhibition on the history of Southport.  Seems to be quite a popular place for film makers.

We had a walk along the waterfront, and a coffee in a cafe at the Old Harbour, then walked the historic walk looking at the houses of the great and the good from times gone by. Unfortunately the houses can’t be visited, but they are quite impressive buildings.

After this we got a cab back to the marina, after having shown the driver the way on out ipad!  Tomorrow we will decide whether it’s the ICW or sailing. At the moment, sailing later in the week looks a possibility.
