Guadeloupe to Antigua

We are now in Antigua tied up in Nelson’s
Dockyard marina in English harbour. We left Deshais at 5.30 a.m for the
40+ miles sail across to Antigua. The wind was from east-north-east force
4-5, we had 2 reefs in the main and our full genoa. The sail was enjoyable
until we were about 2 hours away from Antigua when it got quite rough. We
were all pleased to get in and tied up to something solid.
Nelson’s dockyard is where Nelson was stationed
in 1784, and he eventually took over as naval commander. Many of the old
buildings remain and are now restaurants, bars and shops. It is all very
well presented and a nice spot to spend a few days. Can’t say the same for
the weather which is overcast with frequent showers and windy. We have
spent 2 nights here and will stay another one and then move to a bay before
starting the journey back down to Grenada,
Yesterday we did a tour of the island with
“Spray” to see all the sights. Today we will walk, between showers,
to the fort at the entrance to the harbour. “Spray” is hoping to go to
Barbados to drop off Bill, and meet up with old friends as Ian and Gerry lived
there for a few years. They keep trying to persuade us to accompany them –
we will if the winds are favourable. Barbados is the most easterly of the
caribbean islands stuck out in the atlantic, so we will go if the conditions are
right.
