Almost three weeks ago, my mum left Tortola's airport by dinghy in the pitch darkness. It was an exciting moment for us. For years she'd had got up before most people in West London were awake so she could work at Heathrow airport. She’d never left an airport this way though. Boy, how life changes. Today, she arrived for her flight to Antigua with turtles and sea grass waving at her underwater. Field trip complete; we can report that Tortola’s airport is modern and airy. My mum scanned the place like she might check someone in. All in all very nice, we decided. Some souls waiting for their flight however…could have some passport issues.

My mum left an hour later right over our heads. With an animal in her bag? Her own mother had smuggled a chicken in her hand luggage on a flight from New York to Poland almost 40 years ago. The chicken, who was christened Henrietta :), lived a happy, long life in Warsaw. What’s a rooster from Tortola? Or a hen-pecked cat, we wondered? For if they so desire it, shouldn’t everyone be allowed to see the world?
