Distance Run  49 nm

 

We weighed anchor at around 7.15 am and left Falmouth Harbour bound for Guadeloupe.  Our heading was virtually due south but the wind cooperated both in direction and strength.  With reefs in both sails we made good progress sailing at speeds on excess of 8 knots most of the time.  This is unusually fast for us and helped us overcome the 1.5 knot current against us and our speed reached as high as 9.7 knots at one point.

 

We anchored in Deshaies soon after 2 pm.  As we hope to move on again tomorrow we flew the yellow ‘Q’ flag indicating we haven’t cleared in through Customs and Immigration.  This is fine so long as we don’t step ashore, which we didn’t.

 

We had a relatively peaceful night at anchor and it was again noticeable how much fewer boats there were around compared to a week or so ago.  Many have already lifted ashore or sailed south or north to escape the hurricane zone.
