Last night was a
strangely demanding night for all of the watches.
The 2100 - 0000 watch
(Lizzie and Andrew) experienced very heavy rain squalls, and
were forced to revert to wet weather gear for the first time in quite a
while. The wind kept gusting to 30 knots and the sea
state increased.
The 0000 - 0300
watch (Pascal and Jackie) were smugly keeping nice and dry as the rain had
passed, but were suddenly brought to attention by the sea when a sloppy wave
veered over the stern and part filled the cockpit, soaking Pascal and Tony
on the way. Water poured through the cockpit hatch into Tony's bag, and
generally causing Dave to abandon the cabin for the night and sleep in the
saloon.
The 0300 - 0600 watch
(Ian and Martyn) didn't get any more problems with getting wet, but experienced
quite high winds and waves up to 20 feet high at times - quite curious as the
forecast tells us that they should be 6 - 8 feet!!
A lovely sunrise
after a hard night
Just
like waiting for buses - you wait and wait for ages, and then 2 come
along. Having seen no other yachts for 5 or 6 days, 2 appeared on the horizon
today!! It was good to have a chat on the VHF and compare notes - everyone is on
the home run now with about 1200 miles to go! In particular, Tomohawk is looking
beautiful as she ploughs alongside - she has just had an amazing half hour show
from a large pod of whales, whilst we enjoyed a dolphin
show.
The winds continue to
be good trades, and are forecast to stay with us for at least 5 more days - with
this in prospect, Pascal is looking favourite for the sweepstake, although he
will be quite a long way out!!
Love and best wishes
to all at home from all aboard Great Escape.
