S/V Galatea update

We had a very pleasant stop at Pulau Sipura for a couple of nights after our sporty trip over from Padang as described in my previous update. We had dinner at the very nice, friendly surf resort both nights and Chris managed to get in a day and a half's surfing before our departure on Monday. We anchored in a lovely bay, or rather protected passage between 2 small islands right off the resort. The later being cleverly designed so as not to be seen from the water. The water was clear and beaches spotless. Probably the nicest, most scenic anchorage of our 2015 trip so far. While Chris played, Mike and I took care of more things that required fixing or improving on the boat, most importantly, jury rigging a replacement solution for a sheave, or pulley at the end of the boom, used to haul the mainsail out. We would have been up the creek if Mike hadn't come up with a good solution.

We departed from Mentawis at 2pm on 5/4, motored for the first 2 hours and then picked up 8 to 10 knot southerly winds which lasted through 7am this morning giving us an average of 4.5 knots for the first 17 hours.

As of 8.30pm, (1.30pm UTC), on Tuesday 5/5 we are 150 miles out from the Mentawis at 3degrees 38.7S, 97degrees 43.8E. We are motoring on a heading of 213 degrees at a SOG of 5.5 knots, with no wind. No squall activity since departure and clear skies with maybe 5% cloud cover. We hope to reach more reliable E/SE winds around 8 degrees south, or about 250 miles south of our current position, and then ride those westwards to Chagos. Hopefully we get some wind like last night's to help us along.

Otherwise all well on Galatea after a nice coleslaw, ham and egg dinner with chockie for desert.

Neil, chris an mike
