Five Islands

We left St Georges Caye just before 10am so we had the light behind us and motored unto and through Porto Stuck, a narrow shallow channel between 2 islands, and entered an expanse of yet more shallow water. By this time the wind had picked up to 15 knots, and yes you guessed it, it was on the nose yet again. Heading east we made our way over to Long Cay to explore the lagoon that may have been an option if we decided to us the pass just to the north to exit Belize. The lagoon looked very tight and shallow so no venturing in to explore but the western side of the island looked like a reasonable anchoring spot if required.

Heading north we made our way past Cay Chapel and decided we would not have enough money to visit this resort island - manicured lawns, immaculate gardens and 2 storey buildings, all very impressive. So we continued on to Cay Caulker and a free anchor spot in the bay on the western side.

Jose arrived from Placencia to stay with Marla & Eli for a couple of nights. We all dinghy’d into the Cay Caulker ‘Reception Centre’ dock (not sure what they do) but they were happy for us to leave our dinghy’s while we spent some time in town. This island is a holiday destination. They have express ferries from Belize City and San Pedro as well as a light plane airstrip, all of which run regularly. The front strip (eastern seaside of the island) is predominately restaurants, bars, jewellery and handicraft stalls, supermarkets and motels with a caribbean raster/creole feel. Very vibrant with mainly young American tourists. We stopped at the ‘Brisas del Mar’ restaurant for food, local beer (Belikin) and a ‘Panty Ripper’ (coconut rum and fruit punch) at a 3rd of the price of the Pina Colada at St Georges Cay.

A motel on Cay Caulker - Caribbean colour and style

High speed Express Water Ferry

The main street on the eastern side of the island (tourist strip - Marla, Eli & Jose filling the bill as tourists)

Belikin Beer and Panty Rippers, what a good way to spend the afternoon.

We will wait here until we have a good weather window to move north to Isla Mujeres in Mexico which looks as if it will be a week or more, according to advice from Chris Parker and reference to WindyTY. We are hoping to have WeatherTrack up and running on the iPhone shortly.
