Arriving in Italy
After a pretty rolly Saturday night (6th Sept) in the bay at Poros we sailed up to a bay outside Sami. It was a nice bay and Susan managed to do a bit of snorkelling.
We motored up the short distance to Fiskardho at the top of Cephalonia. The harbour was fairly busy at 11.0 am when we arrived and we anchored and tied up to the harbour wall with a long line. Over the next 7 hours we were amazed at the number of yachts that arrived and squeezed into any space. After seeing very few yachts in the Aegean we were in a harbour with about 60 yachts, a large percentage were charter boats.
The next morning (Tues 9th Sept) we set off on a 2 day sail for Syracuse in Sicily. This was our first overnight sail since the Indian Ocean in early 2011, but we quickly managed to get into our routine. On Tuesday we had the wind as forecast from the NW and either had a good sail or at least a motorsail when the wind was too light for just sailing. We really enjoyed the early evening when we were sailing along very nicely with the autopilot on and we were both up on deck enjoying the bright evening sun.
On Wednesday the wind turned to be from the SW, completely different from the forecast and we had to motor into the light breeze. We arrived in the harbour at Syracuse early on Thursday morning and managed to wake up Mark and Chrissy on Blue Magic by anchoring next to their boat. It was amazing to be alongside Blue Magic after a 3 year gap. We really enjoyed coffee and bacon butties on Blue Magic.
On Thursday afternoon we experienced pretty strong winds in the harbour first from the SE and then at about 4.30 the wing suddenly shifted through 180 deg and came at 25knots from the NW. Blue Magic had warned of this feature and their anchor pulled out when the wind shifted, causing a bit of excitement for them. The wind then died just before 6pm and Mark & Chrissy joined us for a cocktail before giving us a lift to town in their dinghy. We had a really nice meal and then went back to Enchantress for a night cap or two!!
Today (Friday) we had a really nice explore of the old part of Syracuse and found Chrissy outside the Zara shop – not a surprise (see below). We really enjoyed the town and look forward to having dinner tonight on Blue Magic. We expect to stay here until at least Sunday.
There was a nice jacket with a fur collar in the bag – just what you need in 30deg!
The spectacular fountain in one of the squares.
One of the many nice buildings in the old town.
