Day 5 & 6
Shush, Quiet, don’t tell anyone, but we have been very lucky with the weather so far! We have completed 130 miles on both day 1 & 2, 154 miles on day 3, 138 miles on day 4 and 151 miles on day 5. This is much better than expected and so far we have only used about 50 litres of diesel, leaving us 700 litres for the rest of the trip. Some of the diesel has been used for running the engine to charge the batteries, especially when we have wanted to use the autopilot overnight if Oscar (the Windpilot) was struggling to handle the conditions with the sailplan we were using.
We have a number of times had the wind die on us and we have had to put on the engine. We have feared we were in for hours/days of little wind as this is the forecast, however we have soon got the wind back and have quickly got back to doing 6-7 knots and sometimes 7-8knots.
We have now sailed down to 20 deg north and have turned towards the Caribbean, this feels like a milestone and the temperature is improving. It is now shorts and teeshirts during the day. We are well into our routine and enjoying the trip. I even had a haircut from Susan whilst doing over 6 knots, no need for a cover to keep the hair off, it just blew over the side horizontally.
It is still early days and we are still concerned about the lack of wind in the forecast, but it hasn’t been a problem so far.
