Time for a
rest,
Te Anau 7th &
8th February
2008
From Kiosk
Creek we drove back down the Milford Sound road leaving the solitude and the
sand flies behind and seeing the magnificent scenery from a different
perspective. It is amazing how
different things look when going in and coming out of place. We notice it particularly when we do a
there and back walk; it’s a different walk each way over the same ground – if
you see what I mean?
We arrived in Te Anau in
the morning and booked into the lakeside camp. Lakeside!! Bit of a
swizz really, the entrance fronted the lake but everything else was around the
back and it cost top dollar. Every
pitch was taken by 4.00pm everybody taken
in by the lakeside description. It
obviously worked because everything was new and in first class order – there was
a lot of money coming in, and in fairness, being
reinvested.
Te Anau was a
transit post for all the Milford Sound Tourists be they motoring or
trekking. It was the starting point
for the nationally famous Milford Track, where you took a boat to the end of
Lake Te Anau and then a 4 day mountain trek to Milford Sound. We took the water taxi across the lake
and walked back which was very pleasant and not as strenuous as some of our
previous walks. Although landing on the beach from the taxi needed some careful
judgement or you started your walk with wet feet. The Taxi nosed up to the beach, dropped
a ladder over the bow which did not reach the sand and you had to time your jump
between the waves.
Te Anau was a
very pleasnt place where you could laze around in the warm sun - and so we
did.
